Dana Fisher, How Will American Politics Affect International Climate Negotiations?

When Nov 06, 2009
from 10:00 am to 11:00 am

Abstract:

How will current US climate politics affect the international climate negotiations?  I begin by looking at the relationship between US climate politics and the international climate change regime.  Then, I discuss US climate politics today, focusing on the legislation currently under consideration in the Congress.  To unpack the forces driving US climate politics today, I employ a methodological innovation in network analysis to explore the ideological relationships among testimonies presented in Congressional Hearings.  Through this analysis, we gain a better understanding of the various perspectives on the issue and how these perspectives are connected.  In particular, these analyses provide some insight to the ways that the social construction of science is being translated into policy in the US.  I conclude by discussing the implications of my findings to the upcoming negotiations in Copenhagen.
