Invited experts will present case studies of CMSP stakeholder processes from California, New England, and Australia. Participants -- representing both ocean industry and conservation groups – have been invited to comment on the pros and cons of these approaches and apply these lessons to discussions regarding CMSP as new U.S. national policy. The policy lab will focus particularly on five themes: choice of representative stakeholders, transparency, role of stakeholders, sources and uses of data, and process details. These themes have been identified as areas of special interest during discussions at previous labs in the series.
The CMSP project staff will gather direct feedback from participants regarding mechanisms for stakeholder and ocean user involvement. Feedback will be used to provide recommendations for processes that may be adopted in the forthcoming CMSP process as outlined by the U.S. Interagency Ocean Task Force. Project details and previous publications are available on the web: http://nicholasinstitute.duke.edu/oceans.
