Methane and Water Trade-offs: Implications for Terrestrial Sites

Recent scientific papers document previously unknown or under-reported trade-offs that could reduce the benefits from terrestrial carbon sink practices such as reforestation and plantations. The Nicholas Institute is convening a roundtable of top experts to discuss the policy implications of these findings and issue a consensus document in coming months. The discussion will focus on two key papers:

Methane emissions from terrestrial plants under aerobic conditions. Keppler et al. 2006. Nature 439 (12); and

Trading water for carbon with biological carbon sequestration. Jackson et al. 2005. Science 310: 1944-1947
