The series first speaker is Cindy Van Dover, Director of the Duke University Marine Lab. Her presentation is titled "An Emergent Field in Environmental Science and Conservation: The Deep Sea."
The deep sea is the largest biosphere on the planet, but until recently our access to this wilderness was limited and its habitats arguably remained the most pristine on our planet. With development of submersible technologies, scientists have begun to explore this wilderness and catalog its resources and services. At the same time, extractive industries are developing their capacity to exploit deep-sea mineral resources. Some limited conservation actions have been put in place to protect deep-sea ecosystems, but there is need and opportunity for leadership in integrating scientific knowledge with management strategies and policy solutions that protect and preserve the marine environment while allowing sustainable use of its resources. A case study of integrated scientific research and management relating to a proposed deep-sea mineral extraction in Manus Basin, Papua New Guinea will be presented.
