news release: Group Focused on Blue Carbon Policy Features Institute Researchers

Preserving and restoring coastal habitats, such as mangroves and salt marshes, could be an important step to curbing climate change. Two Nicholas Institute for Environmental Policy Solutions' researchers are among the members of the International Blue Carbon Policy Working Group, tasked with addressing the global significance of climate change mitigation through the protection of these carbon-storing habitats.

news release: Duke Data Used to Create iPhone App

A new iPhone app that helps users visualize their carbon footprint uses data from a Nicholas Institute for Environmental Policy Solutions study to run portions of the program. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the creators of the application, used average values of the data for coastal ecosystems contained in “State of the Science on Coastal Blue Carbon: A Summary for Policy Makers” to create the UNEP Carbon Calculator, according to Gabriel Grimsditch.

A new book, out this month, features two chapters on reducing agricultural greenhouse gas emissions penned by researchers at the Nicholas Institute for Environmental Policy Solutions. The 456-page book, Climate Change Mitigation and Agriculture, published by Routledge, reviews the state of agricultural climate mitigation globally and focuses on the design and implementation of activities to reduce emissions among small farmers.

Political leaders, scientists and policy makers from more than 190 nations will gather in Durban, South Africa, this week with the goal of developing a binding international climate change agreement. In their midst: Brian Murray. As director for economic analysis at the Nicholas Institute for Environmental Policy Solutions, Murray will represent the Institute at the meeting—officially known as the 17th Conference of the Parties (COP17) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

news release: Duke Inks MOU with World Wildlife Fund-US

Duke University has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the World Wildlife Fund US to collaborate on research, teaching and the advancement of conservation policy and science. The Nicholas Institute for Environmental Policy Solutions, who coordinated the effort, will help lead four of the six project areas with colleagues from the Nicholas School of the Environment, Sanford School of Public Policy and the Fuqua School of Business.
