Nick Hanley, professor at the University of Stirling, will be the seventh speaker in the seminar series. His talk is titled "Can we Value the Benefits of Ecosystem Services?"
Since the publication of the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment, there has been much interest on the part of policy makers, NGOs and academics surrounding the economic value of ecosystem services. In this presentation, Hanley will summarize what is meant by ecosystem services, and how economic values can be estimated for changes in these services. Examples will be provided from the recent U.K. National Ecosystem Assessment and from U.K. government work on the design of Payment for Ecosystem Service schemes, on how such values could be used in a policy context. Conceptual and empirical difficulties in estimating such values will also be discussed.
