Rob Jackson, Nicholas Professor of Global Environmental Change and Professor of Biology at the Nicholas School of the Environment, and Brooks Rainey Pearson, policy counsel at the Nicholas Institute for Environmental Policy Solutions, will present on natural gas fracking science and policy implications. Their talk is titled "Shale Gas and Hydraulic Fracturing: Research Results and Policy Overview."
The extraction of natural gas from shale formations is one of the fastest growing trends in American on-shore domestic oil and gas production due to technological improvements in directional drilling and hydraulic fracturing that have made it economically viable to extract natural gas from unconventional sources. There is a limited federal role in the regulation of horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing due to executive and congressional actions. As a result, the regulation of this industry takes place primarily at the state level. In this presentation, Brooks Rainey Pearson will discuss the regulatory approaches taken by the states as they work toward the goal of producing natural gas while protecting the environment and the health and safety of their citizens.
Rob Jackson will discuss research on the environmental consequences of shale gas extraction and use, focusing in part on his work in the Marcellus formation in Pennsylvania.
