USDA Nutrient Trading Tool for Falls Lake

The US Department of Agriculture has developed a tool that enables farmers and other landowners to evaluate their options to reduce nitrogen and phosphorus runoff on their fields, as well as the resulting impacts on crop yields. Nicholas Institute Research Associate David Cooley has worked with scientists at USDA to refine and extend the tool for use in the Falls Lake watershed.  Cooley is now working with Durham Soil & Water Conservation District, Wake Soil & Water Conservation District, and others to demonstrate and improve the tool for local farmers.

The nutrient calculator helps individuals see their personal "nitrogen footprint" regarding the Chesapeake Bay.  It asks questions regarding living situation, car, lot size, etc. to come up with a number in lbs/year.  Users may then decide to offset their nitrogen contribution by donated a set amount to the Fund which would be used for stream restoration projects
