Interested in building a high-impact career in countries with rapidly growing economies—but not sure how to get started? Duke undergraduate and graduate students in all degree programs are invited to apply for “Careers Beyond Borders: A Boot Camp for Working in Emerging Markets” on October 12-13.
This two-day interactive workshop will help you explore how to build a career in emerging economies, including in sectors like energy, agriculture, climate, health, logistics, and fintech.
As pathways into international development rapidly evolve, opportunities increasingly span entrepreneurship, operations, and cross-sector problem solving—often in startups, small and medium enterprises, and hybrid organizations that do not use traditional recruiting approaches.
Led by Jonathan Phillips (director, James E. Rogers Energy Access Project) and alumnus Alexander Fankuchen (CEO, Cinch), this boot camp will demystify what it actually takes to build a career abroad: how people land their first roles, what skills matter most, how to navigate uncertainty, and how to create opportunities where formal pathways may not exist.
Through structured sessions, small-group discussions, and individualized exercises you will:
- clarify your interests
- explore career pathways, including entry points for roles in the private sector, public institutions, NGOs, or founding new ventures
- identify essential skills and how to build them at Duke
- gain insight into the practical realities of working abroad (including topics like visas, compensation, living conditions, taxes)
- map out a long-term career vision—and concrete next steps
You’ll also engage with Duke faculty, staff, alumni, and guest experts who have built careers and ventures across emerging markets.
This pilot program is ideal for students interested in international careers, emerging markets, entrepreneurship, development, or cross-sector problem solving. Participants must complete pre-reading and attend the full program (8 a.m.–5 p.m. each day).
Applications are due Thursday, September 17, 11:59 p.m. ET, and selected students will be notified by September 30.
