Ecosystem Services: From Concept to Policy
Ecosystem Services Program director Lydia Olander will deliver the keynote address at Ecosystem Services: From Concept to Policy in Washington, D.C., May 19. The symposium hosted by the American Association for the Advancement of Science & Technology Policy Fellowships will focus on how policy decision making at the national and international levels can improve use of our scientific understanding of the services provided to human societies by nature (ecosystem services). The event will promote discussions of the advantages and disadvantages of placing a monetary value on biodiversity and on developing and applying the associated valuation tools. It also aims to spark a conversation about what constitutes an ecosystem service. Registration is required.

Johnston presented an overview of Best Practices for Integrating Ecosystem Services into Federal Decision Making a companion paper to the Federal Resource Management and Ecosystem Services Guidebook. This paper provides recommendations for best practices specific to ecosystem services assessments.

The National Ecosystem Services Partnership, a Nicholas Institute for Environmental Policy Solutions initiative, will launch the Federal Resource Management and Ecosystem Services (FRMES) online guidebook for federal resource managers at the A Community on Ecosystem Services Conference (ACES) December 8-12 in Washington, D.C. The guidebook describes how ecosystem services can be integrated into agencies' planning and management processes.

Federal agencies responsible for natural areas are increasingly considering ecosystem services in their planning and management decisions, a new approach with multiple challenges. To address them, the National Ecosystem Services Partnership is collaborating with a number of federal agencies to create an
