Forests remain underutilized in both the European Union’s Climate and Energy Package, as well as in the United Nation’s Framework Convention on Climate Change's Post-Kyoto Climate Policy framework. The potential benefits forests can offer, both in terms of climate change mitigation (and adaptation) potential continue to be inadequately recognized. And the general climate change mitigation policy framework fails to provide adequate incentives for the increased production and utilization of forest resources.

Brian Murray, director of the Environmental Economics Program at the Nicholas Institute for Environmental Policy Solutions, will speak at an event co-hosted by the International Carbon Action Partnership and IETA exploring how an effective international climate framework could achieve a greater mitigation outcome than the mere sum of the individual parties' contributions at the United Nationas Climate Conference in Paris.

The Nicholas Institute will host a day-long forum—convened in honor of its tenth anniversary—to assess how we can harness big data, cutting-edge technologies, and adaptation research to create science-based, interdisciplinary approaches attuned to the accelerating and dynamic change in the world.

On Oct. 5, the Nicholas Institute’s Brian Murray will be a panelist for “Living in Our Common Home: Obstacles and Opportunities in Our Culture, Economy, and Politics,” one of the many events in Durham marking the U.S. visit of Pope Francis. The discussion is hosted by Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.

Brian Murray, director of the Environmental Economics Program at Duke University's Nicholas Institute for Environmental Policy Solutions, will speak at the 2015 Beatrice and Arthur Minden Symposium on the Environment "Taking Action: Achieving Ontario and Canada Climate Change Goals." The two day event will focus on the distributive implications of design of the new Ontario cap-and-trade program.

He joins other panelists to discuss "Critical Measures of Success in a Carbon-Priced Economy."

Brian Murray, Environmental Economics Program director, will speak on the Pollution Control panel at the 4th Association of Environmental and Resource Economists Annual Summer Conference in San Diego, California. The discussion will focus on regulating existing power plants under the proposed Clean Power Plan.

The Center for Law, Economics, and Public Policy in collaboration with SCRiM Network will host the conference, "Inequality and the Economic Analysis of Climate Change," at Duke University's School of Law May 27-28. Several Nicholas Institute for Environmental Policy Solutions researchers will present during the conference.

As a consortium of Northeastern U.S. states to limit CO2 emissions from electricity generation, there’s compelling econometric evidence that GHG emissions have declined due to economic, energy market and policy factors. The Nicholas Institute’s Brian Murray is part of an international team of experts developing options assessment reports on critical land use and Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+) issues related to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change discussions.

Navigating the American Carbon World (NACW) is the largest and most comprehensive gathering for information and discussion around climate change policy and carbon markets. Happening April 16-18 in San Francisco, NACW will take an in-depth look at California’s historic cap-and-trade program, including discussions on market structure, revenue allocation, legal issues and forecasts. The conference will also delve into other established and emerging carbon markets around the world and potential linkages. And, NACW will provide a platform for discussing offsets and offset supply, U.S.
