Please join the Nicholas Institute and James E. Rogers Energy Access Project at Duke for presentation and discussion of the new research report titled “Systems-Level Repurposing of Coal Assets: Insights from South Africa, India, and the United States.” This report—led by Duke researchers—presents a comprehensive comparative analysis of coal value chain repurposing efforts in South Africa, India, and the United States. It focuses on transforming multiple components of the coal infrastructure—such as mines, power plants, transport networks, and terminals—into new interlinked industrial applications to support a just and holistic energy transition. This is a hybrid event. A Zoom link will be sent along to registrants via email closer to the day of the event for those attending virtually.

Sandeep Pai, senior lead for international energy transitions and executive in residence at the Nicholas Institute for Energy, Environment & Sustainability and James E. Rogers Energy Access Project at Duke University, will conduct the presentation on the new report. Following the presentation, there will be a panel discussion featuring leading energy researchers, policy experts, and practitioners to explore the implications of systems-level repurposing for energy transition and economic development in coal-dependent regions.

Panel discussion will be moderated by Jonathan Phillips, Director of the James E. Rogers Energy Access Project at Duke University.

Reception to follow from 5-7 p.m.—you must register separately for the reception.
