Information Support for a Greenhouse Gas Reduction Strategy for California Agriculture
California is leading the United States in implementing policies to mitigate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. As part of its comprehensive GHG reduction obligations under state law (AB 32), the state is exploring various approaches to decrease emissions from all sectors, including agriculture.
The California Air Resources Board (CARB), which is tasked with designing and implementing California's climate policies, is developing a scoping report focused on a beyond-2020 GHG mitigation strategy. With the encouragement of CARB and the California Department of Food and Agriculture and with support from the David and Lucile Packard Foundation, the Nicholas Institute brought together University of California agricultural researchers and other experts in a complementary effort to assess the opportunities for GHG mitigation in California's agricultural sector. A new report series--Greenhouse Gas Mitigation Opportunities in California Agriculture--was produced by the Nicholas Institute in collaboration with these researchers to examine these opportunities.
