Nature-Based Solutions Tools Search

This database contains over 400 tools and resources that can help guide practitioners at various stages of the nature-based solutions project cycle. Use the filters to identify the tools and resources most useful to you.

You can filter the full list by the habitat type you’re working in, the nature-based solutions strategy you want to use, the project phase you are looking for help with, or the type of tool/resource you’re looking for.

The tools and resources shown here were gathered through a robust search of both federal and non-federal sources. We recognize that this library will never be completely comprehensive, but if you know of an important missing tool or resource, please email nesp@duke.edu.

Coastal communities increasingly realize the need for adaptation strategies, but many are unsure where to begin. Attend this course to gain a thorough grounding and practical skills for incorporating adaptation strategies into planning processes. Time in class is provided to practice applying what you’ve learned, and opportunities for local collaboration and next steps are emphasized through discussion, participant activities, and local speakers and examples.

Developed for stormwater and floodplain managers, as well as land use planners, this interactive website incorporates tools and methods to derive critical coastal water-level thresholds, as well as assess the potential impacts of exceeding those thresholds on stormwater infrastructure. Managers can take various actions to address the issue, and this guide introduces planning, policy, on-the-ground, and funding options.

This storymap catalogues the Alabama Barrier Island Restoration Assessment whichaimed to investigate viable options for the restoration of Dauphin Island following damage incurred after the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill. It summarizes the needs assessment, baseline assessment, benefit modeling, and solutions approaches used. This storymap could serve as a helpful tool for planning understanding how similar initatives could be undertaken.

Beach stability determinations, information about permit requirements, and monitoring plans are just some of the information presented in this practical guide. The authors provide a helpful six-step plan for beach nourishment and address the problem of getting source sediment to match the sediment of the receiving beach.

NBS Strategies:

This guide covers beach nourishment design, predicting future erosion, and the role of federal agencies in the process. The authors also outline the monitoring process and economic feasibility of projects.

NBS Strategies:

This manual is intended to be used as guidance by NPS staff to better plan and manage beach nourishment projects when beach nourishment has been determined to be consistent with NPS Management Policies. This manual provides tools for resource managers to interface with partners that
are completing technical designs and outlines best management practices that can be utilized to avoid or minimize potential adverse impacts.

The MMIS provides public access
to government-funded and BOEM- sponsored data and information about offshore mineral resources on the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) in the, Atlantic, Gulf of America and Pacific. The primary goal is to assist project proponents in identifying sand and sediment resources for coastal resilience projects and identify barriers to using them.

BOEM's Marine Minerals Program includes several tools, programs and initatives useful for coastal projects involving the use of federal sand and sediment resources. These inclide: the national offshore sand inventory, the marine minerals information system (MMIS), support for environmental studies and sediment identification for projects, mimpact investifations and resource evaluations, and inventory/identification of marine mineral resources for project use.

The Coastal Adaptation Strategies Handbook summarizes the current state of NPS climate adaptation at the time of publication (2016) and key approaches that were currently in practice or being considered for climate change adaptation in coastal areas. The handbook is intended to provide consideration for and guide adaptation planning in coastal parks. The chapters focus on policy, planning, cultural resources, natural resources, facility management, and communication and education. The handbook highlights processes, tools, and examples that are applicable to many types of NPS plans and decisions. One chapter offers a case study of Hurricane Sandy (2012) response and recovery strategies, including changes to infrastructure. Another chapter features practical coastal infrastructure information including cost per unit length of constructed features (including seawalls, beach nourishment, and nature-based features). The level of detail varies by topic depending on the state of research and practice in that field.

A primary goal of the NCBN (Northeast Coastal and Barrier Network) coastal geomorphological program is to provide information to park managers and to improve the understanding of the dynamic nature of coastlines, including the temporal and spatial patterns of change in NCBN parks, for use in management decisions and in describing the condition of marine and coastal areas. The specific objective of this shoreline position monitoring protocol is to identify the seasonal, annual, and long-term trends and variability of shoreline position in the Network parks as part of the basis for understanding the coastal geomorphological system.

This online tool, with recently added data sets and functionality, provides an easy way to better understand county resilience in terms of flood hazards, critical facilities, jobs, businesses, and more.

Users choose their county and topic of interest and the tool does the rest, automatically combining complex data sets to create county-specific insights. The resulting charts and graphics are easy to understand and are used to show community leaders and the public where the county is most vulnerable.

Two options are available: print or electronic. The print version is useful as a handout and for general awareness. The electronic version allows users to see the data superimposed on a map or through a graphic interface, and provides access to the data used to make each snapshot.

Current snapshot topics include flood exposure, marine economy, total economy, and exposure to sea level rise.
