Maidford River Saltmarsh Restoration: Middletown, Rhode Island

State/Territory:

The Maidford River Saltmarsh of Sachuest Point Wildlife Refuge in Middletown, Rhode Island was degraded as a result of sea level rise and powerful storm surges, particularly during Hurricane Sandy in 2012. This project was designed to improve the marsh’s resiliency against sea level rise, which involved a thin layer deposition and invasive plant species management. A total of 11,000 cubic yards of sediment were added, and invasive Phragmites were replaced by 22,000 grass plugs of replanted native species. Mosquito breeding areas were removed and thus benefited human safety. The project was led by USFWS and received funding under the Disaster Relief Appropriation Act of 2013.
