About
Curt Richardson, Professor of Resource Ecology at Duke's Nicholas School of the Environment, will present his peatland hydrology restoration work.
Millions of hectares of former peatlands in the United States have been drained and converted for agriculture and forestry use. Draining, however, promotes the decomposition of the organic matter in the soil, leading to accelerated soil subsidence, severe carbon losses and accelerated transportation of nutrients to adjoining ecoystems. In this presentation, Richardson will discuss his work to provide wetland restoration science facilitating restoration partnerships and sound management decisions regarding carbon and nitrogen sequestration potential under managed and unmanaged hydrologic conditions.
