This position takes an active role in assisting with specialized research activities, in planning and operations, and in providing expertise to the Energy Access Project (EAP) at the Nicholas Institute & Energy Initiative. The role will focus especially in driving forward activities within EAP’s Modernizing Energy Access Finance work stream and Powering Productivity and Healthy Communities work stream.
- Assist the Area Director, Faculty co-director, and EAP-affiliated faculty and staff in conducting policy- and market-relevant research and analysis by reviewing, synthesizing, and presenting relevant literature, articles, and other written materials.
- Based on independent and collaborative research and data analysis, prepare drafts for internal and external reports, publications, articles, and policy memos and briefs.
- Support and help to validate the quantitative and/or qualitative data analysis of other team members according to research and policy needs
- Communicate understanding of scientific, technical, and policy-based approaches to the Institute's target audiences through written and oral presentations.
- Collaborate with principal investigators in developing plans for research projects and to discuss the interpretation of results and preparation of publications. Assist Area Director and Senior Policy Associates in research project management, especially in complex projects with multiple components and funding sources.
- Provide data, literature synthesis, draft narratives, and budgets to assist with grant proposals to foundations, governments, and other potential sponsors.
- Work with faculty and stakeholders to plan, execute and conduct on- and off-campus activities (such as meetings, workshops, conferences, and virtual events) related to engagement with university faculty, Nicholas Institute faculty working groups, and external stakeholders and policymakers.
- Work with student research assistants and interns and assist in identifying new opportunities to involve Duke students in the specific program area.
- Collaborate with EAP-affiliated staff, faculty, students, and EAP Affiliates to ensure up-to-date web content, robust social media presence, and comprehensive monthly newsletter. Stay current with all EAP projects and maintain updated project list and associated content on website. Lead in assembling the monthly EAP newsletter. Assist in communication efforts with Nicholas Institute and Energy Initiative staff and others as needed.
- Correspond and build relationships with key EAP partners, including the SETI network, EAP Affiliates, private companies, and NGOs. Assist in managing project logistics as needed.

Minimum Experience Job Requirements
Work requires four years of experience in research, policy/data analysis or related position. A master's or higher degree in energy, environment, international development, finance, or other relevant field may offset required years of experience on a 1:1 basis, e.g. a two-year master's degree in lieu two years of experience.
