Research Assistant for Competitive Electricity Procurement and Market Mechanisms

Working with the Nicholas Institute (NI) and the World Resources Institute (WRI), this assistantship for Duke University graduate students will focus on surveying and evaluating options for competitive electricity procurement and market mechanisms in the Southeast and the Western US.

The position involves working closely with staff at the NI and WRI to build and populate an online dashboard that would help stakeholders and decision makers better understand various options for procuring electricity given their goals.

Primary responsibilities will be in research and data curation, literature reviews, and other functions as needed.  Required skills include research experience, attention to detail, proactiveness, good judgement, teamwork, and strong organizational abilities. The ideal candidate would be comfortable navigating regulatory dockets and diving into primary sources. Experience and/or familiarity with state regulatory commissions and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, particularly the ability to compare public utility rates and planning processes across jurisdictions would be beneficial. The ability to evaluate the effectiveness of various market mechanisms are additional bonuses.

Schedule: 8 hours per week. Work can be done at various times but student must be available for periodic meetings during regular business hours.
