Research Scientist, Climate TRACE

The Nicholas Institute for Energy, Environment & Sustainability at Duke University seeks a research scientist to support its interdisciplinary research at the intersection of environmental science, specifically drivers of climate change, and data science, including machine and deep learning. This project is a collaboration with Climate TRACE (https://climatetrace.org/), a coalition of a dozen member organizations and participants including former Vice President Al Gore, WattTime, Transition Zero, RMI, Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab, among others. The primary aim of this research is to build an open, global database of greenhouse gas emissions, in part utilizing emerging tools in machine learning.

The intent of this research is to provide actionable information to decision makers to accelerate climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies by sharing greenhouse gas emissions data at an unprecedented level of detail and speed. This research seeks to create asset-level emissions data for every sector (power, fossil fuel operations, transportation, manufacturing, buildings, waste, etc.) and provide those data for the wider community.

The responsibilities for this position include coauthoring research papers to disseminate the insights from and methodologies behind Climate TRACE in collaboration with all members. The research scientist will work closely with partners of Climate TRACE across organizations to develop this work. This research scientist will also be part of the Energy Data Analytics Lab’s research team investigating the buildings sector of Climate TRACE.

The position requires a PhD in a relevant field and experience with writing for academic publications.

This is a 1-year term position with eligibility for renewal based on performance and the identification of additional funding.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Coauthor two or more manuscripts as a first or second author in collaboration with the Climate TRACE coalition on the research leading to the development of Climate TRACE data and its insights and submitted for publication to high impact-factor journals.
  2. Liaise with members of Climate TRACE to gather information about methodologies and key insights for the development of manuscripts and relevant conference publications.
  3. Provide leadership and expertise in developing plans for research, interpreting results of projects and preparing publications. 
  4. Contribute to the Energy Data Analytics Lab’s research related to global, high-resolution estimates of emissions from residential and commercial buildings.
  5. Represent the Energy Data Analytics Lab professionally by attending relevant scientific and academic conferences; present original findings at one or more conferences annually.
  6. Attend the Climate TRACE annual meeting.
  7. Assist with the development of funding opportunities including competitive grant proposals to support the work.
  8. Present your work with Nicholas Institute and Climate TRACE stakeholders when requested.
  9. Supervise and train student research assistants and interns.
  10. Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Position Requirements and Specifications

Education

Ph.D. required in a relevant field (examples include climate science, environmental science, environmental economics, civil and environmental engineering, etc.) 

Preferred Experience and Skill Requirements

  • Demonstrated experience authoring academic publications
  • Relevant experience with decarbonization, greenhouse gas emissions data, and/or energy data
  • Experience using GIS tools for visualizing and communicating geographic data
  • Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work both independently and in a dynamic team environment
  • Ability to manage multiple long-term projects and meet firm deadlines
  • Strong research integrity
