National Emissions Trading System is Key to China’s Green Recovery

Nicholas Institute for Environmental Policy Solutions

In a time of conflicting signals on China’s energy future, the implementation of its national emissions trading system offers unique opportunities to put the country on a long-term path toward lower greenhouse gas emissions, write Alistair Ritchie, director of Asia-Pacific sustainability at the Asia Society Policy Institute, and Jackson Ewing, senior fellow at the Nicholas Institute.

In an op-ed for China Dialogue, Ritchie and Ewing write that taking steps to implement the trading system soon will help China with its post-coronavirus green recovery and put the country on a path to lower emissions, in line with the priorities of President Xi Jinping and Paris Agreement climate goals.
