Faculty fellow Billy Pizer will give the keynote address at the 2017 Chosunbiz Future Energy Forum in Seoul, South Korea, June 15. He will discuss how the changing global political and economic landscape can affect energy industries. The gathering will include global energy firms, government representatives, academics, and consultants.

Faculty fellow Billy Pizer will present “Equity versus Efficiency in Energy Regulation” (June 1, 3 p.m.) and serve as a panelist on the Assessing Approaches to Updating the Social Cost of Carbon panel (June 1, 11 a.m.) at the Association of Environmental and Resource Economists 6th Annual Summer Conference in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, May 31–June 2.

When analyzing the impacts of various regulations, such as those aimed at vehicle and power plant emissions, government agencies use the social cost of carbon (SCC)—an estimate, in dollars, of the net damages incurred by society from a 1 metric ton increase in carbon dioxide emissions in a given year. At the Society for Benefit-Cost Analysis conference in Washington, D.C., March 16, faculty fellow Billy Pizer will serve as a panelist for a discussion of approaches to updating that cost. He will present recommendations of a new report by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine for short- and long-term improvements to the SCC calculation.

Billy Pizer, faculty fellow at the Nicholas Institute for Environmental Policy Solutions and professor in the Sanford School of Public Policy, will present "Evaluating the Paris Agreement's Mitigation Pledges with Statistical Forecasting Models" 9-10:30 a.m. June 11 at the AERE 5th Annual Summer Conference.

In Paris, world leaders signed an unprecedented climate agreement to limit temperature rise to “well below” 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit) over pre-industrial levels by 2100. On February 1, Duke faculty and students who attended the climate change conference will reflect on the significance of the new climate accord, what we can expect from it, and how the Duke community was involved in the conversation.

The Center for Law, Economics, and Public Policy in collaboration with SCRiM Network will host the conference, "Inequality and the Economic Analysis of Climate Change," at Duke University's School of Law May 27-28. Several Nicholas Institute for Environmental Policy Solutions researchers will present during the conference.

Explore different perspectives on the health, energy demand and economic effects of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's developing Clean Power Plan at the workshop "The Clean Power Plan: Health, Energy Demand and Economic Effects." Nicholas Institute for Environmental Policy Solutions faculty fellow Billy Pizer will be among the speakers on a panel focused on the economic effects of the Clean Power Plan.

The Nicholas Institute for Environmental Policy Solutions at Duke University will co-host a side event at the 2014 United Nations Climate Change Conference 20th yearly session of the Conference of Parties meeting in Lima, Peru. 

The Fifth Annual Triangle Law and Econ Conference—Rethinking Regulation and Reform: Behavioral Economics and the Regulatory State—will address issues at the intersection of behavioral economics and law with a special focus on the applications of decision science, choice architecture, and nudging to law, regulation, and policy. The purpose of the conference is to facilitate interdisciplinary discussion, rather than canned presentations between panelists, that will make for an engaging, generative, and fun examina- tion into a particular issue from the

Billy Pizer, faculty fellow at the Nicholas Institute for Environmental Policy Solutions, will speak during a session on carbon market structure at the Navigating the American Carbon World Conference March 27. Since Jan. 1, the California and Québec carbon markets have been formally linked. What impact will this have in California and Québec? What is the value of such linkages? What jurisdiction will be next – Washington, Ontario, or someplace else? This session will examine the California-Québec linkage and the potential impact of other partners joining the market.

Join the Forum for Scholars and Publics from noon to 1:30 pm. Feb. 7 for a discussion by the Sanford School of Public Policy's Philip Cook and the Nicholas Institute's Billy Pizer. Cook and Pizer will talk about the challenges and rewards of conducting research on issues of profound public concern. The discussion will be moderated by WUNC’s Leoneda Inge.
