Harbor Brook Constructed Wetlands Pilot Treatment System

The Harbor Brook CSO 018 Constructed Wetlands Pilot Project serves the dual purposes of treating overflows from CSO 018, currently discharged into Harbor Brook, while also acting as a demonstration project to test the effectiveness of three types of constructed wetland treatment systems (floating wetland island, vertical down flow, and surface water treatment wetlands).

Huie Constructed Wetlands

Clayton County Water Authority (CCWA) has converted from spray irrigation-land application to constructed wetlands to treat municipality wastewater for Clayton County, Georgia. Constructed wetlands lower construction costs from $10 a gallon under the conventional methods to $4.73 a gallon. They also reduce land use by 75%, save energy, and reduce equipment, materials, and maintenance cost.

Anthro Mountain Greater Sage Grouse Habitat Restoration

Greater sage-grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus) populations are declining in Utah and other western states due to the degradation of their seasonal habitats from the encroachment of pinyon-juniper trees. This project evaluated the ecological viability of using "lop and scatter" methods to mechanically remove encroaching PJ trees to manage sage-grouse winter habitat at a study site in Ashley National Forest.

Five Creeks Rangelands Restoration

The BLM led the restoration of sagebrush steppe and riparian plant communities on 75,000 acres of Eastern Oregon rangeland. Treatment focuses on removing western juniper, a desert conifer species that is spreading across the landscape and outcompeting other desert plants. Restoration efforts used a sequential, three-step approach: juniper cutting, controlled burns, and in some cases, aerial reseeding.

Carmel River Restoration Project

The San Clemente Dam on the Carmel River was no longer useful due to sedimentation of the reservoir, and was declared a public safety hazard in the 1990s. This project removed the dam and restored the Carmel River’s floodplain and habitat. This improved habitat and connectivity for wildlife, including the threatened steelhead.
