Environmental Defense Fund Chesapeake Bay Project Coordinator Eileen McLellan will present on "The importance of a watershed approach to reducing hypoxia in the Gulf of Mexico."

The presentation will describe how a U.S. Geological Survey water quality model was used to explore the impacts of changes to land use and land management in the Upper Mississippi-Ohio River system on nutrient loads delivered to the gulf of Mexico. The analysis shows that, in addition to in-field agricultural conservation practices, landscape-scale filter practices can and must play a vital role in efforts to meet regional water quality goals. The need to couple in-field and beyond-field practices at the local and regional scale will require changes to conservation planning, outreach and funding that will in turn require innovative partnerships to implement.
