Wheel collects trash in the river before it can flow into the harbor.
Inner Harbor Water Wheel (Mr. Trash Wheel)
Effectiveness or Ecological Impact
The most Mr. Trash Wheel has ever collected in a single day is 38,000 lbs (Meet the Trash Wheels - Mr. Trash Wheel, n.d.). As of 2019, Mr. Trash Wheel has collected approximately 1253 tons of trash and debris—mostly plastic bags and bottles, cigarette butts, and foam containers (Kormann, 2019). Mr. Trash Wheel has intercepted over 3 million pounds of trash (Beacham, 2019).
In 22 months, it collected 420 tons of plastic (Lindquist, 2016). It's collection capacity is 22 tons of plastic/day (Winterstetter et al., 2021). It collected 200 tons/year (Winterstetter et al., 2021).
The machine moves slowly enough that wildlife can escape before ending up in the dumpster (Lindquist, 2016).
