Cat Island Chain Restoration

State/Territory:

The Cat Island Chain in Green Bay, Wisconsin was lost to erosion and storms in the 1970s. This project is rebuilding the islands using clean dredged material from a nearby navigational channel. This will create beach and wetland habitat for many species and support both sport and commercial fisheries. This use of dredged material from the navigation channel has led to a 50-60% reduction in maintenance dredging costs. The rebuilding of these islands and the return of biodiversity (such as nesting birds, amphibians, waterfowl, etc.) have provided educational opportunities for local students and university groups.
