Community Driven Water Management: The Tomorrow's Water Model for Playa Restoration

State/Territory:

Tomorrow’s Water led by Playa Lakes Joint Venture (PLJV) is an organization working to ensure water availability under immediate and future drought conditions in the Ogallala Aquifer region. PLJV restores playas to enhance water availability and quality, helps communities increase irrigation efficiency, and empowers communities to establish water management plans. PLJV restored 708 acres of playas in New Mexico, and 1,142 acres of playas in Kansas. They planted native vegetation buffers around 31 playas to help filter out sediment. PLJV is also increasing public awareness about playas and playa restoration, and the role they play in water availability and quality in the region.
