Creating Refuge for Mohave Tui Chub at Mojave National Preserve
State/Territory:
The Mohave tui chub (Siphateles bicolor mohavensis = Gila bicolor mohavensis) is a federally endangered species that was native to the Mojave River, however now only exists in natural and man-made refuges. This project aims to establish and maintain refuges for the fish to promote recovery. Managers restored water quality, managed vegetation, and lowered salinity at West Pond to improve habitat. They also repurposed the Morning Star Mine Pond and translocated 500 tui chub to the site in 2011. This project also included an environmental education component at the Lewis Center for Education Research.
