Nature-Based Solutions Case Study
Dow Former Ash Pond
State/Territory:
In Midland, Michigan a former ash pond for a coal-fired powerplant is located within the floodplain of the Tittabawssee River. Instead of the traditional (and expensive) cap and long-term maintenance plan, Dow's corporate nature team removed the ash and restored the area to a conservation wetland. This nature-based solution saved $2 million compared to the traditional solution, added 25,000 native plants to the site, improved water quality, and reduced local flooding impacts. This restoration site now supports pollinating species and has improved 1.6 kilometers of riverfront open space for recreation and enjoyment by Midland residents.
