Drake Wilson Island

State/Territory:

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers established a 5-hectare marsh on Drake Wilson Island off of the coast of Florida in 1976. This was one of the earliest beneficial use of dredged material projects for habitat enhancement. For more than 40 years, this marsh has created recreational opportunities and reduced erosion. The island is now a site for camping, fishing, and bird-watching. This project reduces erosive forces in the area which improves navigation and avoids increased dredging and channel maintenance costs.
