Nature-Based Solutions Case Study

Eradication of the Invasive Seaweed Caulerpa Taxifolia from Agua Hedionda Lagoon and Huntington Harbour

State/Territory:

This project is a large-scale, multi-agency Effort to eradicate the infestations of the invasive strain of the tropical marine alga, Caulerpa taxifolia from two sites in California. At the time when no technique had been demonstrated effective to treat the infestations, the team chose to apply chlorine bleach treatment, either through injection as sodium hyopchlorite, or placed as a solid, pelleted formulation. Despite the differences in distribution patterns across the two sites, results shown that certainty of full eradication were at least 97.71% at the Agua Hedionda Lagoon site and 99.99% at Huntington Harbour.
