Flagstaff Watershed Protection Project: A Federal-Municipal Partnership to Reduce Fire Severity and Post-Fire Flooding

State/Territory:

Following a devastating 2010 wildfire and post-fire flood outside of Flagstaff, city residents approved a $10 million bond to support forest restoration work to reduce the risk of wildfire and post-fire flooding. This bond created the Flagstaff Watershed Protection Project (FWPP), which implements restoration projects like thinning and fuel reduction. This project also maintains a public awareness campaign to keep communities informed on all restoration work and plans. FWPP efforts have treated over 400 acres of forest to reduce wildfire risk, and have collaborated with local universities on ecological research projects.
