Giant Salvinia Control in Lake Raven
State/Territory:
Led by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD), this project aimed to apply the integrated pest management (IPM) approach to control the invasive giant salvinia (Salvinia molesta) in Lake Raven, a 203-acre reservoir located in the Huntsville State Park, Texas. Biologists combined chemical, physical, and biological techniques, including spraying herbicides (Glyphosate, Flumioxazin, and surfactants), installing floating barriers, and introducing salvinia weevils that feed exclusively on giant salvinia. Public outreach campaigns were also initiated to educate recreationists on reducing the introduction and spread of invasive plants. By early 2021, biologists had achieved 99.5% reduction of giant salvinia.
