Half Moon Reef Oyster Restoration Project

State/Territory:

The Nature Conservancy restored a 54-acre oyster reef in Matagorda Bay, Texas. This project successfully restored large, thriving oyster reefs that have enhanced biodiversity in the bay. This increase in biodiversity has improved recreational fishing opportunities and fishing-related tourism in the area. The increase in fishing at Half Moon Bay reef adds around $691,000 to Texas’ gross domestic product annually. The project created a dozen new jobs leading to $465,000 in annual labor income. The oyster reef, containing 40% more biodiversity than bare bay floor, also improves water quality. This project is a model of restoration success in the area, and highlights the many social benefits associated with coastal restoration projects.
