High Salt Marsh in Georgia

State/Territory:

This project was conducted in Brunswick, Georgia to evaluate the recovery response of salt marsh vegetation and impact of selected species upon thin layer placement of dredged materials. The study found that marsh elevation could be altered through thin layer placement of dredged material without loss of the functional values of ecosystems and environment. This project proved that thin-layer placement of dredged material on coastal marshes is an alternative disposal method that meets ecological, economic, and aesthetic standards expected by coastal citizens. Partners on this project included the U.S. Army Engineer District, the University of Georgia Marine Extension Service and the U.S. Army Waterways Experiment Station.
