Nature-Based Solutions Case Study
Lower Yellowstone River Fish Passage
State/Territory:
The diversion dam on the Lower Yellowstone River impeded upstream migration of many native fish species, including the endangered pallid sturgeon (Scaphirhynchus albus). This project built a headworks, weir, and fish bypass channel to open access to 266 additional kilometers of the river for fish migration, spawning, and larval development. This project contributes not only to the recovery of pallid sturgeon but will increase the populations of many species of game fish. This will increase recreational fishing opportunities and tourism in the area.
