Marsh Island (Portersville Bay) Restoration Project

State/Territory:

Marsh Island is a state-owned island in the Portersville Bay portion of Mississippi Sound, Alabama. This project will restore 50 acres of salt marsh at Marsh Island to prevent erosion and rebuild habitat. The site will include a permeable breakwater, added sediment, and added native marsh plantings. The total budget for this project is $11,280,000.00. This project also features 5 year monitoring program. This program will monitor marsh elevation, spatial extent of marsh, planting survival, vegetation species composition and percent cover, invasive presence, and erosional effects on adjacent islands.
