Nature-Based Solutions Case Study
North End Restoration Project
State/Territory:
The North End of Assateague Island National Seashore was experiencing continual and accelerating shoreline migration and erosion. Hurricanes and jetty construction have heightened these issues and led to geomorphologic, habitat, and biotic changes, along with 350 meters of shoreline shift. This project aims to restore natural conditions of the island and slow shoreline migration. This project will nourish the beach with sediment and enact a “long-term sand management plan” to re-establish a “natural” sediment supply that reflects historic rates. This project placed 1.8 million cubic yards of sand in the system, and will continue to nourish the beaches twice per year.
