Restoring Bolsa Chica Wetlands

State/Territory:

The Bolsa Chica wetland restoration was the largest coastal wetland restorations ever undertaken in Southern California (Amigos, 2008). The project restored full and muted tidal wetlands function to almost 600 acres of the Bolsa Chica Wetlands that were degraded by agricultural and urban development. Elements of the project included constructing two bridges, clearing oil field remnants, and building two sandy islands as nesting habitats. The restored site also offers off-site programs and guided tours for recreation. The project was initiated and conducted through an Interagency Agreement of eight state and federal agencies along with the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach.
