Nature-Based Solutions Case Study
Santa Monica Beach Restoration Pilot Project
State/Territory:
This project restored 3 acres of shoreline and dune vegetation on Santa Monica Beach to enhance dune habitat and biodiversity along the shore. These enhanced dunes will protect the beach and nearby infrastructure from flooding and sea-level rise. This promotes recreation on the beaches and improves tourism to Los Angeles’ iconic beaches. This project restored the beach with native plant species, supporting overall biodiversity on the beach and improving aesthetics with flowering plants. These species will attract pollinators and shorebirds, improving birdwatching opportunities. The new dunes will also provide protection from coastal storms and storm surges.
