Seney Peatlands Restoration Project

State/Territory:

USFWS led the Seney Peatlands Restoration Project to restore the hydrology and ecological integrity of the peatlands, wetlands, and streams affected by the Walsh Ditch in the Seney National Wildlife Refuge. Between 2002–2003, nine earthen ditch plugs were installed along a 4.5 km section of the ditch. Research showed that restoration has returned water table height similar to unditched peatlands, and it was promising to see a change of 11% of the land area to wetland plant species. Portions of the study area that were wooded have begun turning into wetlands, while other areas will remain as uplands or become lowlands due to raised water level.
