Nature-Based Solutions Case Study

Sugarloaf Cove (Lake Superior)

State/Territory:

The Sugarloaf Cove site, historically a rare wetland on the north shore of Lake Superior, was used as a landing site for a pulpwood operation and was leveled and filled with gravel to build roads and buildings. Minnesota Department of Natural Resources led a restoration project in 1998 to excavate gravel and plant native plants onsite. By the completion of this project in 2000, the topography and flora onsite had been returned to a more natural state. This restored site provides better ecosystem function as well as educational opportunities through the Sugarloaf Cove Interpretive Center.
