UNDP World Oceans Day Celebration Calls for Innovation in Achieving a Sustainable Ocean Economy

Nicholas Institute for Environmental Policy Solutions

On World Oceans Day, the United Nations Development Programme hosted “A Conversation with the 2020 UNDP Ocean Innovators” that highlighted a suite of inspirational ocean protection and restoration projects UNDP is supporting through the Ocean Innovation Challenge. These innovations were selected through the OIC’s 2020 global call for proposals on SDG 14.1, reduce marine pollution, that received over 600 submissions from a wide range of public, private and civil society stakeholders.

The Nicholas Institute for Environmental Policy Solutions at Duke University was among those selected to expand its Plastics Pollution Policy Inventory. Launched in 2020, the inventory currently includes more than 300 downloadable policies, providing decision makers at all levels a tool to identify and replicate best practices for reducing plastic pollution in the world's oceans.
