This database contains over 400 implementations of nature-based solutions. Use the filters to identify the case studies most relevant to you.

While all cases here exemplify applications of NBS strategies, they were gathered from various sources and not all were written using the framing of nature-based solutions. To qualify as a nature-based solution, a project must provide benefits to both people and nature. In some instances, the human benefits are present but not emphasized in the case write ups; these cases were included because they still provide useful information to learn from.

Since 2017, biologists from the Arizona Game and Fish Department (AGFD) and USFWS have conducted mechanical removal of Green Sunfish to protect native aquatic species diversity in Ash Creek, Arizona. With a rock waterfall barrier near the confluence with Trout Creek, managers and biologists isolated source populations for native fish while removing the invasive Green Sunfish.

The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources hired the Design-Build team of EcoGro/Ridgewater/Stantec to design and build a one-mile extension downstream to create one of Kentucky’s first self-sustaining trout stream capable of supporting spawning, which was previously impaired by the Wolf Creek dam.

This project was initiated in 1995 to develop the scientific basis for ecological restoration of southwestern forests and woodlands at both operational and landscape scales. The project worked specifically in four project areas in the Greater Mount Trumbull Ecosystem within the Grand Canyon/Parashant National Monument: piñon-juniper restoration, piñon-juniper herbaceous revegetation, cheatgrass abatement and monitoring, and ponderosa pine restoration.

Three wildlife overpasses and adjacent funnel fencing were constructed along United States Highway 93 (US93) to promote habitat connectivity for bighorn sheep and reduce wildlife-vehicle collisions. The project team spent two years monitoring GPS data for sheep distribution and trans-highway movements before construction.
