Nature-Based Solutions Tools Search

This database contains over 400 tools and resources that can help guide practitioners at various stages of the nature-based solutions project cycle. Use the filters to identify the tools and resources most useful to you.

You can filter the full list by the habitat type you’re working in, the nature-based solutions strategy you want to use, the project phase you are looking for help with, or the type of tool/resource you’re looking for.

The tools and resources shown here were gathered through a robust search of both federal and non-federal sources. We recognize that this library will never be completely comprehensive, but if you know of an important missing tool or resource, please email nesp@duke.edu.

This self-paced training module walks spatial analysts through 6-step process to create a GIS plan that integrates NBS to address coastal flooding issues. It goes from defining your goal to creating a scoring system for prioritizing the best natural features to focus NBS implementation on, and links to resources, checklists, case studies and guidance that can help demystify each step.

*Includes: Stormwater Management Model (SWMM), National Stormwater Counter (SMC), Green Infrastructure Wizard (GiWizard), Watershed Management Optimization Tool (WMOST), Visualizing Ecosystems for Land Management Asessment (VELMA) Model, Green Infrastructure Flexible Model (GIFMod), Community-enabled Lifecycle Analysis of Stormwater Infastructure Costs (CLASIC) Tool, and the Integrated Decision Support Tool (i-DST)

Also developed by NOAA, this guidebook outlines the physical, ecological, and policy considerations that influence a living shoreline creation project. Emphasis is given to the site suitability factors for successful projects.

This guide provides information on how to thin a ponderosa forest. This includes stocking rate, basal area, and deciding which trees to mark.

NBS Strategies:

Gulf TREE is a decision support tool designed to help stakeholders like natural resource managers and community planners in the gulf states access the right climate tools for their work. Users can navigate the tool using a series of filters independently, or opt for a guided search where they answer questions to view their recommended tools.

Relevant phase:

This guide covers all the main facets of dune restoration, including invasive species removal, constructing boardwalks, and rebuilding dunes. The authors also include a troubleshooting section, monitoring advice, and information about the relationship between dune restoration and beach nourishment.

NBS Strategies:

This resource focuses on mitigating risks associated with coral transplantation. Topics covered include disease transmission, ecological concerns, and genetic considerations.

NBS Strategies:

This guide is the comprehensive policy document for FEMA's Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP), HMGP Post Fire, Building Resilient Infrastructure and Communities (BRIC), and Flood Mitigation Assistance (FMA) programs.

This report reviews a vision for designing a road network that incorporate WRCS for human and wildlife benefits. It includes a description of common challenges faced when installing these structures.

This toolkit is a guide that helps recipients of HUD Community Planning and Development (CPD) funds identify opportunities to use their CPD dollars to mitigate the impacts of natural related hazards. The toolkit is divided into 6 separate sections, each related to a specific natural hazard. Each section provides an overview of the natural hazard as well as suggestions for different mitigation techniques that are eligible under different CPD programs. Additionally, the toolkit has a financing section with other funding opportunities for resilience projects.

Software that provides tree benefit estimation science through various tools and support.

This document discusses background on coastal barrier island systems, the disruption of coastal sediment supply resulting, the physical and biological impacts of sediment removal and placement on benthic habitats, impacts of sediment removal and placement on fish and other marine species, changes in migratory bird nesting and foraging habitats resulting from sediment removal and placement, the ong-term impacts of sediment removal and placement on physical coastal resiliency, and the data necessary for monitoring/assessing these projects.

This website provides a list of registered invasive species within each state and the regulations accompanying them.

This Interagency Working Group provides support for energy communities across the United States, specifically those in transition due to coal mine/power plant closures. This landing page includes links to several tools/databases (the funding clearinghouse, which links to several federal/state funding resources; maps/visualization tools, including a coal power reinvestment tool, a map of recognzied energy communities in the IWG, and a tax credit map), and a project planning guide with guideliens for social and economic transitionis after a plant/mine closure.

Relevant phase:

This web-based tool creates visuals that capture lake level changes that range from six feet above to six feet below historical long-term average water levels in the Great Lakes. Potential shoreline and coastal impacts are also provided. This information can be used to determine appropriate preparations, including zoning restrictions, infrastructure improvements, and habitat conservation.

Relevant phase:

This website provides information to fire managers in the states surrounding the great lakes.

NBS Strategies:

Encompassing all aspects of large wood designs, this guide covers their geomorphic, hydrological, and ecological considerations. The authors also discuss the risks involved, regulatory considerations, and monitoring.
