Nature-Based Solutions Case Study

Amoco

State/Territory:

Muskegon Lake’s shoreline and wetlands were severely degraded from industrial waste disposal, shoreline land use, and stormwater management. The Amoco Fish and Wildlife Habitat Restoration Project restored wetlands and wildlife habitat at a 9-hectare site. A constructed shoal system, the removal of a concrete wall, and a planted embankment restored wetland habitat. The shoal system reduces erosion and provides spawning habitat, the wall removal promotes new wetland formation, and the planted embankment separates contaminated uplands from clean nearshore environments. This project includes new recreation paths, reduces flooding, and has increased both local property values and tourism at the Lake.
