And the Trees Will Last Forever

State/Territory:

In northern Wisconsin, tribal foresters from the Menominee Nation are working to speed regeneration of more than 200,000 acres of forest areas that have been treated for invasive diseases like oak wilt. Their efforts are also creating forests that are better adapted to future conditions. From 2013 through 2018, members of Menominee Tribal Enterprises (MTE) identified and treated over 300 pockets of oak wilt and removed affected trees to prevent fungal transmission. They also reforested 10 demonstration sites with oaks, locally collected seeds, and planted understory grasses, herbs, and shrubs to establish entire plant communities.
