Nature-Based Solutions Case Study
Springhouse Run Stream Restoration
State/Territory:
Springhouse Run in Washington, D.C. is a tributary to the Anacostia River, which flows into the Chesapeake Bay. This project restored the stream and its riparian buffer to improve water quality, incorporate it aesthetically into the National Arboretum, reduce erosion, and enhance biodiversity. The restored stream uses ponds, riffles, and pools, along with surrounding native plants, enhanced soils, stones, gravel, and wood chips to convert polluted urban runoff into clean water. River herring have returned to the stream following restoration, a testament to the success of the project.
