Nature-Based Solutions Case Study
Watergate Wetlands Restoration Project
State/Territory:
Watergate Wetlands Restoration Project aimed to restore wetlands that were historically present at Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, and to restore the natural function of Van Campens Brook. Led by the National Park Service, the project involved draining constructed ponds and pumping water back into the brook through a sediment-blocking filter. Trees were cut down to return the wetland and reused to create habitat structures or wildlife. The project also included seeding and planting native plants and treating invasive species such as rusty crayfish. Once construction is complete, the restored site is expected to offer recreational opportunities including bird watching and cold-water angling.
