In 2007 the Anacostia Watershed Society (AWS) initiated an experimental research project, called the 38th St. Bridge Project, on the rip-rap slope along the streambanks in order to demonstrate an alternative to the county's annual mowing-and-spraying of herbicide to control invasive species along the streambank.

While all cases here exemplify applications of NBS strategies, they were gathered from various sources and not all were written using the framing of nature-based solutions. To qualify as a nature-based solution, a project must provide benefits to both people and nature. In some instances, the human benefits are present but not emphasized in the case write ups; these cases were included because they still provide useful information to learn from.

In northern Wisconsin, tribal foresters from the Menominee Nation are working to speed regeneration of more than 200,000 acres of forest areas that have been treated for invasive diseases like oak wilt. Their efforts are also creating forests that are better adapted to future conditions.
Greater sage-grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus) populations are declining in Utah and other western states due to the degradation of their seasonal habitats from the encroachment of pinyon-juniper trees. This project evaluated the ecological viability of using "lop and scatter" methods to mechanically remove encroaching PJ trees to manage sage-grouse winter habitat at a study site in Ashley National Forest.
Encompassing some of the wildest and least populated territory in the state, the Klamath region of Northern California faces threats from invasive species in its wildland ecosystems. To protect the forests and rivers, restoration efforts began by applying county-scale mapping tool to identify and treat high-priority eradication target.
The Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) was established in June of 1984. The project aimed to restore the restore spring sources and outflow channels and associated riparian habitats that were previously degraded by agriculture, road-building, and water diversions, and now were dominated by invasive species.

The iconic and productive Sonoran Desert landscapes of the Tuscon Basin are threatened by Buffelgrass, an invasive species introduced to the area in the 1930s. Buffelgrass alters the fire regime and is a threat to ecosystems, and human life and property. The Southern Arizona Buffelgrass Coordination Center was established in 2008 to bring stakeholders together to remove Buffelgrass effectively.
The Blue Hole Cienega Restoration Project aims to restore the Blue Hole Ciénega, one of the largest remaining ciénegas in the Southwest. Close to 95% of ciénegas have been lost or damaged due to farming, overgrazing, draining, channelization, and drying during development.
Warming temperatures threaten native species in the Madrean Sky Islands Archipelago as plants and animals cannot migrate to higher elevation under the steep slope and finite extents. Conservation organizations collaboratively document the climate vulnerability of mountain springs and facilitates restoration work to enhance habitats and protect biodiversity.
Lake Ontario’s Braddock Bay has lost 123 acres of emergent wetland. The Braddock Bay Ecosystem Restoration Project was created to save and reestablish 340 acres of this coastal wetland area. This project will increase habitat for fish and wildlife, reduce erosion, manage invasive species, and increase bay-area property values.
The Las Cienegas National Conservation Area in Arizona is home to five of the rarest community types in the American Southwest. Managers constantly combat woody-shrub encroachment onto valuable grasslands, specifically the species velvet mesquite (Prosopis velutina). The Bureau of Land Management and the Nature Conservancy partnered to evaluate the condition of resources and to review monitoring protocols.
Saguaro National Park, in the Sonoran Desert near Tuscon, Arizona, is threatened by invasive perennial grasses. These grasses outcompete native plants and heighten the risk of wildfires, a disturbance that the park’s ecosystem is not adapted to. Park managers want to remove invasive grasses and restore native species landscapes.
The West Fork San Luis Rey River on Palomar Mountain, in Southern California hosts a population of native Coastal Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss irideus) that were threatened by the invasive Black Bullhead (Ameiurus melas). After two years of work, biologists from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife achieved complete bullhead eradication within this stream.
BLM is leading the construction and maintenance of a system of up to 11,000 miles of strategically placed fuel breaks to control wildfires within a 223-million-acre area in the Great Basin that includes portions of Idaho, Oregon, Washington, California, Nevada and Utah. Fuel breaks would be implemented along roads or rights-of-way on BLM-administered lands.
Florida’s Charlotte Harbor Estuary was established as national estuary under the 1987 National Estuary Program for its significance to wildlife and local economy. A 20-year Comprehensive Conservation and Management Plan (CCMP) was formulated to restore and protect the estuarine system. Restoration activities started in June of 2001
Plum creek is a primary tributary to the Chatfield Reservoir, a major source of water for Denver, Colorado. Urban development and increased stormwater runoff disrupted the creek’s sediment dynamic, causing streambed degradation and loss of wetlands. This project restored Plum Creek and its riparian habitat to increase water supply and protect native species.
A collaborative effort from USFWS, USDA, and Maryland DNR has worked over 20 years to eliminate the exotic, invasive nutria, which, combined with sea level rise and land subsidence, have caused over 5,000 acres loss of wetlands. Working closely with public and private landowners, the project managed to remove 14,000 nutria and protect over 250,000 acres of marshes.
To eradicate the Asian longhorned beetle (ALB), in 1999, USDA and USFS developed a 10-year plan in 1999 that follows five stages: phase-in, delimitation, and containment; suppression and control; deregulation; and eradication. All infested trees were either removed and replaced by non-ALB host trees on a one-to-one basis or treated with the insecticide Imidacloprid via trunk or soil injection.
Restoring Lake St. Clair, between Michigan and Canada, has been an international priority for decades. The Clinton River Mouth Wetland, at the edge of Lake St. Clair is the site of a restoration project headed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. This project will remove invasive species and use dredged materials to create wetland habitat.
