The GEMS project includes resources that can help projects and programs consider the impacts of their work on different stakeholder groups, but it doesn’t address all aspects of equity. Additional equity considerations not covered by the GEMS project include:
For planning:
- How to set equity goals
- How to optimize for equity while taking into consideration other types of project goals (e.g., ecological or biophysical goals)
- Ensuring that projects respond to access and distribution concerns raised by the community at the planning stage
For monitoring:
- How to adjust a project once inequities are discovered
- How to collect information that fully describes and addresses the historical and/or systematic context for inequities in distribution of and access to benefits
For stakeholder engagement:
- Using best practices for inclusive and equitable stakeholder engagement. There are many resources available to help projects do this:
- Five step approach to stakeholder engagement - BSR
- Equitable Community Engagement Toolkit - Boston Public Health Commission
- Designing equity-focused stakeholder engagement to inform state energy office programs and policies - NASEO
- Inclusive community engagement - C40 Cities
- Stakeholder engagement for inclusive water governance - OECD
